My glass workshop is in gorgeous Humboldt, California. My husky and I enjoy regular walks in our local forests. My glass is often inspired by my surroundings ... but perhaps never more literally than with this redwood platter. This glass makes me want to grab a leash and go for a hike!
The right side of the platter is translucent white. Creating a large neutral colored space helps ensure that any food would look tasty on this platter. The is over a light lavender sky with wispy white clouds. The band to the left is solid light lavender glass. The platter is finished with a dark forest green border.
This unique piece was fired three times. The first step was to create the overall glass slab (everything except the greenery in the tree). This was then fused into a single slab. Glass confetti was added for some glittery greenery and the piece was fused a second time. Glass confetti is thin glass shards (creating by blowing a giant bubble and breaking it as it cools. The platter was fused a third time to produce the overall shape.
This platter is 1/4″ thick and weighs over 3 pounds. Although it is 100% glass, it is not delicate. Treated with care it can last a lifetime.
Fused glass is never a perfect rectangle or perfect circle. By its very nature, measurements are approximate. This platter is approximately 15" square. It is approximately 1" deep.
